ISI's Journal Citation Report (JCR) as SFX target

• NOTE

  Ex Libris meanwhile introduced two JCR targets (ISI_JOURNAL_CITATION_REPORTS_*) to the global SFX database. This page will therefore no longer been updated.

• Description

  The two editions of ISI's Journal Citation Reports® provide evaluation data (e.g. journal impact factors) for more than 6,400 science journals and 1,800 social sciences journals. Subscribers to the JCR may use this SFX target to offer a link to the journal's trend graph from their SFX menu.

  The implementation uses the "Generic" target parser as well as a list of object portfolio. Instead of maintaining the title list, a threshold like "$obj->need('ISSN')" can be used alternatively, see The SFX linking to Journal Citation Report for details.

Setup instructions

1. Login to the SFX Admin Center
2. Use the Target Manager to add a new target, e.g.:
   • Target: ISI_JOURNAL_CITATION_REPORT
   • Public Name: Journal Citation Reports
   • Services: getCitedJournal
3. Edit the new getCitedJournal target service to add following details
   • Parser: Generic
   • Parse Param: IF(ISSN) "http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcAuth=JCR&SrcApp=JCR&DestApp=JCR&PointOfEntry=Impact&KeyRecord=" ISSN
   • Object Lookup: Yes
4. Use the DataLoader to create the corresponding object portfolios:
   • Select Target + Service: ISI_JOURNAL_CITATION_REPORT_LCL-getCitedRecord
   • Column 1 (Primary Key): ISSN
   • Column 2: AVAILABILITY
   • Load Type: Add Portfolios

The following DataLoader file combines the titles listed in JCR Science Edition 2008 and JCR Social Sciences Edition 2008:

• DataLoader list for JCR: jcr_portfolios.txt (8199 portfolios)

The following two title lists have been provided by Thomson and could be used to create DataLoader file for

• Title List for JCR Science Edition 2008: SCIE_JCR_2008.txt (6598 titles)
• Title List for JCR Social Science Edition 2008: SSCI_JCR_2008.txt (1980 titles)

Please note that the sum of the individual title lists may is bigger than the number of entries in the combined list because various journals appear in both editions.

Update notice for JCR editions 2008

New title lists for the 2008 editions have been received from Thomson in August 2009 and added as attachments to this page.

Please note that about 150 journals have been removed from JCR between 2007 and 2008. According to Thomson support, titles are removed for a variety of reasons: They cease publication or the title changes or the journal is no longer covered by ISI's Web of Science. Therefore, we would suggest to remove all existing object portfolios before loading the new file:

1. Login to the SFX Admin Center
2. Use the Export tool to export "All" object portfolios from "ISI_JOURNAL_CITATION_REPORT_LCL-getCitedJournal"
3. Save the report file on your local computer and use the DataLoader to remove the corresponding object portfolios:
   • Select Target + Service: ISI_JOURNAL_CITATION_REPORT_LCL-getCitedRecord
   • Column 1 (Primary Key): ISSN
   • Load Type: Remove Portfolios
4. Use the Target Manager to check if all portfolios have been removed successfully and continue to create new portfolios via the DataLoader (see Setup instructions above)
